Emergency Electrician: Out-of-Hours Call-Out
Lost power, a burning smell from a socket, a fuse box that will not reset, or water where the electrics are? If it cannot wait until working hours, AJS offers an emergency electrical call-out outside normal working hours. Normal working hours are Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 17:00. Call 07932 928607 and say what is happening.
Is it an emergency?
If there is a risk to people or to the property, treat it as one: a smell of burning or hot plastic, scorch marks or sparks at a socket, switch or the fuse box, water getting into anything electrical, or a board that has tripped, will not reset and has left you without power. If you can reach the main switch on the fuse box safely, turn it off and keep everyone away from anything wet.
If it can safely wait until normal working hours, it usually should. Describe it anyway. You will get a straight answer about whether it needs someone now or can be booked into normal hours.
Problems that are usually treated as urgent
Any of these is worth a call outside normal hours. If the whole street is off, that is the electricity network’s job: dial 105.
A smell of burning or hot plastic. From a socket, a switch, a light fitting or the fuse box, even if nothing has tripped.
Scorch marks, sparks or a hot socket. Stop using it and switch off at the board if you safely can.
No power and the board will not reset. The RCD or main switch goes straight off again, or nothing happens at all.
Water in the electrics. A leak through a ceiling light, a flooded floor with sockets in it, or rain getting into an outside socket.
Exposed or damaged wiring. A cable cut through, a socket or switch hanging off the wall with the wires showing.
Tripping that keeps a freezer, heating or medical equipment off. Not dangerous in itself, but not something to leave overnight.
Not sure which it is? Say what you can see and smell. That decides it.
What an emergency call-out is for
The first job is to make it safe. That might mean isolating one circuit so the rest of the house can stay on, or finding the one socket or fitting that is causing a trip and taking it out of use. If a full repair cannot be completed during the call-out, Alex will explain what needs to happen next.
An out-of-hours call-out is not a promise to attend every time. Call, describe the problem, and you will get a straight answer about whether Alex can come and when. If it is not urgent, it goes into normal hours and is quoted like any other job.
How an out-of-hours call-out works
You call 07932 928607 and say what has happened, what has stopped working, and whether anything smells hot. Outside normal hours, call rather than message.
If you can do it safely, turn off the affected circuit or the main switch while you wait.
On arrival, making it safe comes first. The cause is found where it can be, and any circuit that goes back on is tested.
If a full repair cannot be completed during the call-out, Alex will explain what needs to happen next, and the work is booked in normal hours.
Anything beyond the call-out is quoted before it is agreed.
Normal working hours are Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 17:00. The call-out exists for the problems that cannot wait for them.
Problems that often start as emergencies
A tripped board that will not reset
A burnt-out socket or switch
A light fitting that has failed and taken the circuit with it
Water damage to sockets, lights or an outside circuit
A damaged cable from drilling or building work
A shower, cooker or EV charger circuit that has failed
Loss of power to part of the house
When it turns out not to be an emergency
Plenty of calls are about something that is wrong but not dangerous: a trip that has reset and stayed on, one dead socket, lights that flicker. Those are found and fixed in normal hours. Electrical fault finding and repairs explains how the cause is found.
If the board itself is the problem, that is covered on the consumer unit upgrades page, and it is only suggested when the tests show it is needed.

Common questions
Do you offer a 24-hour service?
AJS does not advertise a 24-hour service. Normal working hours are Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 17:00, and an emergency call-out is available outside those hours for urgent problems. Call to check whether Alex can come.
Is there an out-of-hours charge?
Ask when you call. Anything beyond the call-out is quoted before it is agreed, and you will be told plainly what is and is not included.
Should I turn the power off?
If there is burning, sparking or water involved, and you can reach the main switch on the fuse box safely, yes. If you cannot reach it safely, leave it and keep people away from the area.
The whole street has no power. Is that you?
No. A street or area outage is the electricity network operator’s job. Dial 105 from any phone to reach them.
Will it be fixed on the first visit?
Making it safe is the first priority on any visit. Whether the full repair happens then depends on what has failed and whether parts are needed. If it cannot be completed during the call-out, Alex will explain what needs to happen next.
Call and say what is happening
Outside normal hours, call rather than message: 07932 928607. Say what has happened, what has stopped working and whether anything smells hot. If it can wait, send a message and it will be picked up in working hours.
