House Rewiring and Alterations
Old wiring, a home you have just bought, or circuits that have been added to over the years? AJS carries out full house rewires and alterations to existing wiring, across Redhill, Reigate, Tadworth and Nutfield.
Send a short description of the property to start.
A full rewire or alterations?
A full rewire replaces the ageing wiring throughout a property, along with the sockets and switches.
Rewiring and alterations are changes to existing wiring rather than a full rewire, such as moving or adding circuits, altering a lighting layout, or extending power into a new room.
Not sure which you need? An EICR reports on the condition of the wiring that is there now. Does my house need rewiring? explains why condition matters more than age.
What a rewire involves
New cables have to run through walls, floors and ceilings. One AJS customer described the channelling up and down walls and the lifting of carpets and floorboards as inevitable on a whole house rewire.
Ask what is included. Before work starts, ask what the quote covers once the wiring is in, such as filling and making good the walls, and what will be left for a plasterer or decorator.
Testing and paperwork. The finished work is tested and certified where required. The electrical certificates guide explains which certificate you get.
Price and timing. Both depend on the property, so neither is given here.
Extensions, conversions and new builds
The same work applies to new parts of a home. AJS customers on Checkatrade describe wiring an extension and a garage conversion, and electrical installation for new build properties is on the AJS list of services.
If a fuse box will also need replacing, consumer unit upgrades explains how that is checked.

A whole house rewire
“We had the whole house rewired - whilst the house was occupied which adds a whole other dimension to the task. Alex (and Sam) were extremely professional, proficient, friendly and always happy to explain what was happening and when. Super helpful as I was working from home throughout the entire process. They were very sympathetic with the property and did everything possible to reduce the (inevitable) channeling up/down walls, pulling up carpets and floorboards. At the end of each day they cleaned up and left the house clean and tidy. Excellent service, cost and follow up. Thank you!”

“Alex did the wiring for our extension and was helpful throughout. Importantly, he communicated well and made sure to be present when needed at different stages of the extension.”

Common questions
Does an old house always need a full rewire?
No. It depends on the condition of the wiring, not its age. An EICR shows what condition it is in.
Can part of the house be rewired?
Yes. Rewiring and alterations cover changes to existing wiring rather than a full rewire, such as moving or adding circuits.
Will there be mess?
New cables have to run through walls and floors, so some disruption is part of the job. Ask before work starts what is included afterwards.
What should i send?
The type and age of the property, roughly how many rooms, and any photos of the fuse box or problem areas.
