Security Light Installation and Replacement
A dark drive, path or back door? A security light that no longer comes on, or stays on all night? Say where you want the light and what is there now, and Alex can fit a new security light, replace an old one, or add a sensor to the lights you already have. Security lighting work is available across Redhill, Nutfield, Reigate and surrounding areas of Surrey.
A new light, or one that needs replacing?
Both are common. Some security lighting jobs are a first light at the front door, over the drive or at the back of the house. Others are replacements: the old light has failed, stays on, or has seen better days. Say which it is when you get in touch.
A security light job has three parts. Where the light goes and what it should light, where the power comes from, and how it is switched: by a sensor on its own, or with a switch as well. All three are checked before anything is quoted.
Security lighting jobs AJS is asked for
Each one is looked at and quoted before anything is agreed.
A new security light. At the front door, over the drive, down the side or at the back of the house, wired from a suitable supply.
Replacing a security light. A light that no longer comes on, stays on, or is broken, swapped for a new fitting where the wiring and position are suitable.
Adding sensors. A PIR sensor fitted so outside lights come on when someone approaches.
Security lights alongside other work. Security lighting can be planned alongside garden lighting, outdoor sockets or other outside electrical work.
Options when you are not sure. If you know the area you want lit but not the fitting, Alex can suggest options.
Not sure what you need? A photo of the spot you want lit, and of any light already there, is usually enough.
What decides how big the job is
Swapping a security light where one already works from a suitable supply is usually the simplest job. A light in a new position needs a supply and a way to switch it, which may mean running a cable from inside the house or from an existing outside light. Where it goes matters too: the light and its sensor are positioned and angled with you, so they cover the path, door or drive you want lit rather than the road or a neighbour’s window.
That is why the position, the supply and the switching are looked at before anything is quoted. You are told plainly what is and is not included.
How a security light is fitted
You say where you want the light and what is there now. A photo of the spot and of any existing light helps.
The position, the supply and the switching are checked, and the type of light is agreed with you.
The old light is removed, or the new position is prepared, and the light is fitted and wired.
The sensor is set up so the light covers the area agreed with you.
Everything is tested before it is handed over, and the area is left tidy.
Where the work needs it, you get a certificate recording what was done and that it was tested.

Garden lights and faults
Lighting for the garden itself, outdoor sockets and power to garden buildings are covered on the garden power and outdoor lighting page. It is the same electrician and it is quoted the same way.
If the electrics trip when an outside light comes on, or when it rains, that is a fault rather than a fitting. Electrical fault finding and repairs explains how the cause is found, and the RCD guide explains why it happens.

Common questions
Can you replace my old security light with a new one?
Usually, yes, where the existing wiring and position are suitable. A photo of the old light helps to confirm that before the visit.
Can a sensor be added to the outside lights I already have?
Sometimes, depending on the fitting and how it is wired. Alex can check whether a separate sensor can be added or whether replacing the light makes more sense.
Will it shine into my neighbour’s windows?
The light and its sensor are positioned and angled with you, so they cover the path, door or drive you want lit. Where a spot is close to a neighbour, that is part of the conversation before anything is fitted.
My security light stays on, or never comes on. Can you fix it?
Often the sensor or the fitting has worn out, and a replacement is the simplest answer. You are told plainly whether a repair or a new light makes more sense. If the light trips the electrics, that is a fault, and it is found first.
Will I get a certificate?
Where the work needs one, yes. It records what was done and that it was tested.
