Mains Smoke Alarm Installation and Replacement

A smoke alarm that keeps chirping, alarms that have been up for years, or a room that has none? Say what is fitted now and where, and Alex can replace your mains smoke alarms, fit new ones, or look at one that will not behave. Smoke alarm work is available across Redhill, Nutfield, Reigate and surrounding areas of Surrey.

Replacing, adding, or one that keeps sounding?

Most smoke alarm jobs start in one of three places. The alarms are old and you want them all replaced. A landing, hallway or new room needs another alarm. Or one alarm keeps chirping or going off and you want to know why. Say which it is when you get in touch.

A mains smoke alarm job starts with what is fitted now. Which alarms you have and where they are, how they are wired, and whether they are linked so that one sets off the others. That is checked first, so the new alarms are chosen to suit what you already have.

Smoke alarm jobs AJS is asked for

Each one is looked at and quoted before anything is agreed.

  • Replacing all the alarms. Older mains smoke alarms taken down and new ones fitted in their place.

  • Adding an alarm. A new mains smoke alarm where there is not one now, wired in and set up to work with the alarms you already have.

  • An alarm that keeps sounding. An alarm that chirps, goes off for no clear reason or will not settle is checked, and you are told what is causing it and what will put it right.

  • Smoke alarms alongside other work. Smoke alarm work can be done alongside other jobs, such as new lights or sockets.

Not sure what you have? A photo of one of the alarms, and a note of where they all are, is usually enough to start.

What decides how big the job is

Replacing alarms where mains alarms are already fitted is usually the simplest job. Adding an alarm where there is none means bringing a supply to that spot and making sure it works with the alarms you already have. The number of alarms, where they are and how the existing ones are wired all play a part.

That is why what is fitted now is looked at before anything is quoted. You are told plainly what is and is not included.

How smoke alarms are replaced or fitted

  • You say what is fitted now and what you need. A photo of one of the alarms and a note of where they are helps.

  • The existing alarms and their wiring are checked, and the alarms to fit are agreed with you.

  • The old alarms are taken down, or the new position is prepared, and the alarms are fitted and wired.

  • Every alarm is tested before it is handed over, and the house is left tidy.

Faults and other work in the house

If the electrics trip, or part of the house loses power, that is a fault rather than a fitting. Electrical fault finding and repairs explains how the cause is found.

New lights and fittings around the house are covered on the lighting installation page. It is the same electrician and it is quoted the same way.

Common questions

Can you replace just one alarm?

That depends on what is fitted now and whether the alarms are linked. Alex checks what you have and tells you whether one can be replaced on its own or whether replacing them together makes more sense.

My smoke alarm keeps chirping or going off. Can you look at it?

Yes. The cause can be the alarm itself, its wiring or the way the alarms are linked. Alex checks which it is and tells you plainly whether the alarm needs replacing.

Do i need an electrician to replace a mains smoke alarm?

Mains smoke alarms are wired into your electrics, unlike alarms that run on batteries alone, so replacing one means working on that wiring. It is a job for an electrician.

Will new alarms work with the ones i already have?

That is what the first check is for. What is fitted now and how it is linked decides which alarms are suitable, and that is agreed with you before anything is fitted.

What do you need from me?

A photo of one of the alarms, where the alarms are, and what you would like done are usually enough to start.
