Extractor Fan Installation and Replacement
A bathroom fan that has stopped, rattles or no longer clears the steam? A shower room or en suite that has never had a fan? Say what is there now and Alex can replace it, fit a new one, or add a timer so it keeps running after the light goes off. Extractor fan work is available across Redhill, Nutfield, Reigate and surrounding areas of Surrey.
Replacing a fan, or fitting one where there has never been one?
Both are common. Many of the fan jobs AJS is asked for are replacements: the old fan has failed, become noisy or looks tired. Others are a first fan in a bathroom, shower room or en suite. Say which it is when you get in touch.
A fan job has two parts. The fan needs power, switching and, in a bathroom, a fitting suited to where it sits. It also needs a route for the air to leave the room. Both are checked before anything is quoted.
Fan jobs AJS is asked for
Most of these are small jobs. They are looked at and quoted before anything is agreed.
Replacing a bathroom fan. A fan that has stopped, become noisy or no longer clears the steam, swapped for a new one where the existing wiring and position are suitable.
A fan where there has never been one. In a bathroom, shower room or en suite, wired from a suitable supply and switched with the light or on its own.
Adding a timer. So the fan keeps running for a while after the light is switched off.
Fans fitted alongside other work. A new fan done on the same visit as bathroom lights, a pull cord or new downlights.
Ceiling fans with lights. A ceiling fan with a light built in, fitted and wired.
Not sure what the fan is? A photo of it, and of the switch, is usually enough.
What decides how big the job is
Swapping a fan where one already works from a suitable supply is usually the simplest job. A first fan in a room is a bigger question: it needs a supply, a switching arrangement and a way for the air to leave the room. Where the fan sits matters too, because fittings close to a bath or shower need the right rating for that position.
That is why the fan, the supply and the route are looked at before anything is quoted. The route for the air is part of that conversation, and you are told plainly what is and is not included.
How a fan is fitted
You say what is there now and what you would like. A photo of the fan, the switch and the room helps.
The supply, the switching and the position are checked, and the type of fan is agreed with you.
The old fan is removed, or the new position is prepared, and the fan is fitted and wired.
Any timer or isolator the arrangement needs is set up.
Everything is tested before it is handed over, and the room is tidied.
Where the work needs it, you get a certificate recording what was done and that it was tested.

Bathrooms, kitchens and lighting
A fan that is part of a new bathroom or kitchen is planned with the rest of the electrics on the kitchen and bathroom page, because the lights, sockets and circuits go in at the same time.
Bathroom lights, downlights and pull cords are covered on the lighting installation page. It is the same electrician and it is quoted the same way.
If a fan has stopped working because something keeps tripping, that is a fault rather than a fitting. Electrical fault finding and repairs explains how the cause is found.
What customers have said
“Sam fitted a new extractor fan to our bathroom - looks great and works well! He was very courteous, and considerate of the fact that we have a small baby who was sleeping while he was doing the job - he kept the noise and disruption to a minimum.”

Common questions
Can you just swap my old fan for a new one?
Usually, yes, where the existing wiring and position are suitable. A photo of the old fan and its switch helps to confirm that before the visit.
Should the fan come on with the light?
It can, or it can have its own switch. Many people prefer it to come on with the light and keep running for a few minutes afterwards on a timer. That is agreed with you before it is fitted.
Why is my fan running but not clearing the steam?
It may be too small for the room, worn out, or held back somewhere along the route the air takes. The fan and its switching are checked first, and you are told plainly what would make a difference.
Is there anything special about fans in bathrooms?
Yes. A fan close to a bath or shower needs to be rated for that position, which is why the fan is chosen with you rather than bought blind.
Will I get a certificate?
Where the work needs one, yes. It records what was done and that it was tested.
